The AV Club posted a list of 17 “scare” films about the teen menace. Some highlights:
* Thirteen— though pretty over-the-top in terms of the main character’s extreme and short turnaround, as the AV club points out, it does kind of have some truth to it, in my opinion. I feel like it’s not too far off as a kind of a summary of my teen years for sure.
* Kids and Suburbia: I remember watching these movies as a teenager being simultaneously scared, depressed, impressed & jealous. Not necessarily in that order. I was so jealous that these kids were allowed to do whatever they want so much that it actually was to the detriment of themselves. I was weirdly lustful for the amount of danger that presented..that unknown factor I sensed always looming around whenever I was out unsupervised with my friends. I remember my first ever unsupervised car ride with a group of friends when I was 14/15 or so. Even though we literally went driving around the neighborhood to the mall or whatever, I felt like because we were all together, determining our own course, any potential danger was all the more exciting. It’s crazy, but it was one of my top 5 most fun times I’ve ever had. However, as I got older and started to face some of those actual dangers face-to-face, the more I started to understand how depressing it all was that a lot of these kid’s parents didn’t give a shit about them, and that they were raising themselves without any sort of direction. The house those kids lived in in Suburbia was actaully kind of really disgusting and frightening. I remember both wanting to live in a place like that, with no rules, etc., but also scared to think that people I knew actually DID live like that, and that if anything bad happened to them, they were pretty much on their own— a feeling that can be pretty scary as a teen. That kind of shit can really fuck you up and turn you into something you never thought possible at such a young age. I guess that’s part of the appeal, though, it’s not about the future, it’s about doing whatever you want, when you want to NOW.
So, excuse me while I get back to work, meanwhile listening to the Misfits on my ipod.
