Song I’m Obsessed With This Week: Daylight by Matt & Kim

Posted By: Coco Buchanan

For all the morose, maudlin crybaby music I’ve been posting lately, I hope this comes as a welcome relief.  However…..get ready for some goddamn whimsy!  Even though one might find “Daylight” and/or Matt & Kim, in general, a little too abrasive in this particular way, I think they are quintessential listening material for spring and summer.

I’m sorry, but, whether you find them annoyingly cute or not, this is a great song.

It makes me think of friends I have, where we can essentially be anywhere (yes, even a dumpster!) and I still have fun with them, laughing and laughing and all into our own little world.  Or, like the simple adventures around the city with friends that you’re more likely to take now that it’s getting warmer.  Or like in the beginning of a relationship right when you start to feel comfortable enough with that person to be your total goofy self, and yet the newness of it is still very exciting.

All of these things are blatantly calling out spring to me.  If you’re still stuck in one or various wintertime-era funks, I think this is just the song to pull you out.

Fiona Apple, Why Try To Change Me Now?

Posted by: Coco Buchanan

Cy Coleman originally wrote this song for Frank Sinatra, and I guess this version from Fiona Apple has been floating around lately, from a concert in January.  As per usual of Ms. Apple, her version of this song (listen to the original here) is extraordinarily sad….and so, predictably, I freaking love it.

Here are the lyrics:

Song I’m Obsessed With This Week: Middle Cyclone by Neko Case

Posted by: Coco Buchanan

OK, so yeah, it’s another Neko Case song.  But I’ve been listening to the new album a lot, ok?  I had stated previously that my favorite at that time was Vengeance Is Sleeping.  And though I still really like it, I’m now switching back & forth from “This Tornado Loves You” and “Middle Cyclone”.   I don’t know what it is with me and tornadoes.  Well, sort of.

Um, how amazing is this cover?

Deceptacon

I met Kathleen Hanna last night at a Gender Studies panel at the New School!  AHHHHHHH!!!!!!  If I told my college self about this, I think my head would have exploded.  We actually had a conversation about music and writing.  She signed my Yes Means Yes book!  She was incredibly nice, approachable, and inspiring.

I have way more to say abotu this, but, for now, here’s Jem and Deceptacon!

Song I’m Obsessed With This Week: Hold On, Hold On by Neko Case

Posted by: Coco Buchanan

I was just telling a colleague of mine that probably nothing Neko Case could do would disappoint me. She’s just come out with a new album called Middle Cyclone. So far, my favorite song on the album is Vengeance Is Sleeping. As her AV Club Interview notes, Neko is always singing about that which cannot be tamed more specifically, not taming that which cannot be tamed)– mostly nature and animals.

This track from Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, is not too far a stretch. Instead of being about forces of nature outside herself, this song is actually more semi-autobiographical. I cannot tell you how much this song has resonated with me, especially in the depths of drunken despair.

I’m even going to put the entire lyrics here:

The most tender place in my heart is for strangers
I know it’s unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous
Hangin’ round the ceiling half the time
Hangin’ round the ceiling half the time

Compared to some I’ve been around
But I really tried so hard
That echo chorus lied to me with its
“Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on”

In the end I was the mean girl
Or somebody’s in-between girl
Now it’s the devil I love
And that’s as funny as real love

I leave the party at three a.m.
Alone, thank God
With a valium from the bride
It’s the devil I love
And that’s as funny as real love
And that’s as real as true love

That echo chorus lied to me with its
“Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on”

That echo chorus lied to me with its
“Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on”

Years ago when I first got together with my boyfriend he made me a bunch of CDs and loaded them all on to my computer, so I could put them on my ipod and listen to them as I went from miserable temp job to miserable temp job and hopeless interview to hopeless interview. Each CD had a really diverse playlist Gram Parsons, Jon Brion, Run DMC, Kaada, Smokey and Miho and Otis Redding and like that. I didnt have the CDs on in any order and so I just hit random and let my iPod shuffle things up.
